Crochet Lingo & Abbreviations

Several terms and abbreviations are used in crochet. These can vary slightly between crochet bloggers and books, but here you will see and need to understand these:

beg -- beginning
bp -- back post
ch -- chain
dc -- double crochet
dec -- decrease
F.O. -- fasten off
fp --front post
hdc -- half double crochet
invdec -- invisible decrease
lp -- loop
rep -- repeat
rnd -- round
sc -- single crochet
sl st -- slip stitch
tog -- together
ww -- worsted weight

Foundation chain -- the starting chain line of a project
Gauge -- how loose or tight the project is expressed in terms of rows and stitches in a given section, usually a 4 inch square
Surface crochet -- Using a section of crocheted rows or rounds as a background, decorative crotchet stitches are worked on top
